Working on the litho stone in the Río Grande. 1988. Photo by Jeffrey Ryan.

note: When I was invited by Tamarind Institute to produce a lithograph, they allowed me to take one of the 100-pound litho stones to the Río Grande, which was the first time one of the stones had left the premises. I used sand directly from the riverbank to create a texture on the prepared stone. Once back at Tamarind, a drawing of a book cover, Proverbial Philosophy, was chine-colléd onto the paper and names of New Mexican rivers were written around the border.

note: I was in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to document the ceremony for Yemanjá, the Afro-Brazilian deity of the waters. Along Copacabana Beach, devotees bring offerings to the sea and build huge sand structures lit by candlelight at night.
